Outdoor Activities

A range of outdoor activities are available in Ballyhoura Country such as rock-climbing, orienteering, canoeing, kayaking, raft-building, hill-walking, abseiling and much more.

There are many safe caves in Ireland and we're blessed with the caves in Mitchelstown being on our doorstep. Try out our traditional Gaelic games, which are played by both men and women. Gardening is a very popular pastime in this area of rich, fertile soil. There are many gardens open to the public but even the private gardens are well worth viewing. Rock-climbing may seem to be only for the skilled and courageous but with the expert help and good care of the various centres offering this activity; everyone can find their own level. Don't forget about the newly opened, world-class mountain biking centre in the Ballyhoura mountains or the Limerick Wake and Ski, where you can enjoy our world renowned sea-scape.



Agricultural and Rural Study Visits


Ballyhoura Country offers an ideal opportunity to gain an insight into family farming, agricultural production, food research, food processing, rural development and agri-tourism.

Agricultural Study

A range of family farms engaged in livestock rearing such as beef, dairy, sheep, deer and pigs and farms with alternative enterprises such as home baking and farm visits, are open to you. Agricultural research in animal breeding, animal nutrition, grassland management, dairy production, dairy technology, food processing, product development and quality control are also available as visits, with tours of local livestock marts and agricultural colleges.

Rural Development

Ballyhoura Country offers intensive study visits in the rural development process in Ireland including briefing, presentations and visits to successful Rural Development Projects in the area.

Mountain Biking

The Ballyhoura mountains can boast the first world-class, mountain bike trail in Ireland. The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails are the largest MTB trail network in Ireland. Forest road climbs lead you into tight twisty singletrack with loads of ups and downs, tight turns and technical rocky bits. The trails range from a moderate 6 kilometre Greenwood loop to the demanding Castlepook loop, over 50 kilometres in length!

Doneraile Golf Club

This beautiful parkland golf course, founded in 1927, is acclaimed by many as the 'jewel in the crown of nine hole golf courses'. Adjacent to Doneraile National Park, this course is well endowed with an abundance of natural trees, making it a most picturesque golfing experience.

The sixth hole is the signature hole at Doneraile, with a severe dog leg to the right bounded by the local graveyard. The tee shot is a 200 yards carry over an intimidating ravine.

This attractive parkland course, established in 1941, has now extended to a pleasant 27 hole heavily wooded course, well known for its lush fairways and beautiful greens. Its location at the foothills of the Ballyhoura Mountains and next to Munster's most central town makes it an ideal centre for golf - a mere 40 minutes from both Cork and Limerick cities.

The club is renowned for its friendliness, which extends to Irish and ovreseas visitors alike. On completion of a game, one can relax in the luxuriously appointed and tastefully designed clubhouse and avail of the excellent catering and bar facilities.

The purpose built centre, based in its own landscaped grounds, has a modern catering area accommodating up to 60 and an indoor sports hall with climbing wall. There are also lounge areas, function and lecture rooms.. Angling

Ballyhoura Country is centrally located in an extensive river network of the great Shannon and Blackwater rivers and their tributaries offer the fisherman an excellent choice of game and coarse fishing. Lough Gur, Co. Limerick’s largest lake is some 14 miles south east of Limerick City where anglers can fish for pike and perch.
